Shock wave therapy for erectile dysfunction (ED)

While not FDA approved, Urology Times has had a succession of articles on penile shock wave therapy for erectile dysfunction (ED), using 1/10th the amount normally used for urinary calculus breakup (lithotripsy).  Even if not completely successful those patients in whom PDE-5 inhibitors (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra) has not worked can now use them effectively.

The shock waves break up scar tissue which is replaced with new vascular growth (angiogenesis).  The number of treatments can vary from 6 to 12, and 2 treatments can be done a week.  Nurses can deliver the treatment.  Each session lasts about 30 minutes.  Everyone in the room needs to wear heavy duty ear protection because the sound generated is very loud.  Ultrasound jelly placed on the penis as the transmitting agent.  While a “severely affected group” of patients might not respond, if patients are treated early enough, ED might never progress.

This information is put out as a news article, as this treatment is only being given in the United States at research centers.
