Thank you for providing a forum for discussion on this issue. I am 57 year old male int the Chattanooga, TN area, who has recently been diagnosed, by my GP, with phimosis and he proscribes circumcision as remedy, comically referring to it as my, “sex change operation”. I’m still looking for the humor. He has arranged an appointment with a urologist in Chattanooga but I am uncertain how best to assure myself that I have received the best opinions before I make my final decision.  I’m not sure what specific help you might offer but any referrals to information or anything that you might offer as general guidelines would be most appreciated to say the very least.

I have only lived in this area approximately 3 years so have no local network nor history to draw from and frankly I have been frightened by such frivolous attitudes as that described above.  Since being in this area I have been prescribed anti-inflammatory meds which specifically state “not to be prescribed for persons with heart conditions”, I have had two heart attacks and house six stents within my chest.  This prescription came from the same GP referenced above.

Specific to the circumcision issue I understand that some bleeding is to be expected and can be excessive.  I take Plavix daily as well as low dose aspirin and have been refused orthoscopic surgery to deal with a simple torn miniscus in my left keen because of this.  How much additional risk does this present in circumcision?

I am floundering right now Doctor and would just like to try to assure myself that I fully understand my options and possible repercussions.  I have undergone three previous out-patient surgeries which were described as, “common”, “standard”, even, “a cake walk”.  All three have left me with life-altering after effects so if I sound a bit neurotic or paranoid, maybe I am.

Hi, I am 15 and am looking for a circumcision that would look similar to that of a boy who was circumcised after birth.  Basically I prefer not to have a bad scar. And a normal look.  I have also had sex, will this affect my circumcision?

Thank you for your speedy response.  You said Most insurance companies pay a doctor about 300 for circumcision.  I can handle 300 with no problem.  Is that the max that it would cost for the surgery alone?
You listed some reasons for having it done.  Surprisingly you mentioned a problem that I have, uncomfortable sex.

I was married for 25 years and sex was not enjoyable. My wife had passed away 6 years ago. If I re-marry, I don’t want to go through the same experience again.  Why other guys have no problem with their sex lives being uncircumcised is beyond me.  I did.  Go figure.

You didn’t reply to my transportation question. If transportation is not readily available and near by  I  can’t come.  I am legally blind and can’t drive. How far is the hotel from your clinic where I would spend the night?

Also you did not reply to my question for after the surgery, do I have to follow up with my doctor?  Yes that one doctor did laugh at me that’s why I don’t want to tell my present doctor.  I called the urologist some time ago here in Saginaw and asked if they did adult circumcision.  She said yes.  After answering my other questions I heard the receptionist laugh as she hung up.

Was she laughing at me or of something else I don’t know but due to my past experience I took it personal. Oh by the way I am 58 years old.
And one last question for now that you didn’t respond too, how much discomfort is there after the medicine wears off?

Our fee is 250 for the consultation and 1750 for circumcision .

That alone is 2000 and transportation and hotel room for 3 nights could
be another 700 more.  Is this affordable for you. 

If not, then please have you circumcision done locally.  Hate to say this
but if you are legally blind, you may not be as fussy if you have a
standard circumcision.

Will my insurance cover that? If not what would be the total cost to me. Do you require cash or can I make payments? You had mentioned different types or styles of circumcisions, is there a difference in price depending on what type/style I choose. I would want the full circumcision if there is such a thing. You had mentioned that you don?t have an office here in Mich but suggested that I contact a urologist here in my area. I have to be referred to them by my doctor. I was laughed at once before by another doctor and now I am embarrassed to approach my new doctor. Also I don?t have a good reason except that it is a preference that I have and my doctor will probably tell me (as did the first doctor) that the insurance won?t cover it. Taking your thoughtful questions in the order posed…

You had mentioned on the phone that this circumcision is considered cosmetic surgery.

Whether it is done for medically valid reason which include but not limited to recurrent tears, hygienic problems with inflammation, tightening with limited ability to retract, bleeding from sexual trauma, uncomfortable sex, etc, we will perform it as cosmetically a we can.

Most insurance companies are reasonably liberal with indications.  Typically they will require that the specimen be sent off to pathology for examination.  We cannot tell a lie nor should you, as that would be medical fraud.

Please confer with a representative of your carrier and pose the question directly based upon your indications.

Please confer with your insurance company for “out of network” provisions.  That refers to when a doctor is not contracted or does not agree to accept your insurance, the insurance company will make out a check to you directly.  Most insurance companies pay a doctor about 300 for circumcision and that’s why some doctors don’t spend as much time as we do.   If you wish us, you do have to be prepaid by surgery and usually make a 50% non-refundable deposit to schedule.

I would want the full circumcision if there is such a thing.

How do I know that I will not lose sensation in the glans penis?

At your age best to do it only for a justifiable medical reason.

You will need a letter of medical clearance by a cardiologist, and the procedure should only be done in a hospital setting with ancillary care provided by the department of anesthesia.

We have put a penile implant in a man in his early 90′s who still drives, has all his faculties, owns 2 homes.  Safety first.

I have been battling the idea of a circumcision for a long time, my insurance is aetna choice pos.my foreskin has never exposed the head of my penis in my lifetime.i never really had issues with girls and sex, except the last 1 who complained of a bad taste.Not only was this embarrassing but it has shot my confidence to an all time low.Not being circumcised is on my mind any time I am I am with a new girl, what will she think, what will she tell her friends, what doesnt she tell me. I would like to know more about adult circumcision and would want you to provide your services to me.I dont last long in bed, i am not sure if its because of the extreme tightness of the foreskin. Thank you for your interest in what we do. Regretfully we are not Aetna providers.  They may pay you for out of network coverage. You definitely need a circumcision as your penis probably elaborates carcinogens that could be a causative agent of cervical carcinoma. What woman wants that.
